SONOFF
Zigbee 3.0 USB Coordinator (EFR32MG21)
Plug this into any USB port and start building a Zigbee network in minutes. Pre-flashed coordinator firmware means no JTAG, no serial terminal, no setup ritual. Pair IKEA bulbs, Aqara sensors, Sonoff switches, and 100+ other devices through a single, bus-powered stick.
Built on the Silicon Labs EFR32MG21, the same chipset that powers most serious Zigbee deployments in the home automation community. Works with both Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA out of the box, your choice at configuration time. Zigbee 3.0 compliant with backward compatibility to Zigbee 1.2, so older devices pair without issue.
Things to build with this
- Pass the dongle through to a Docker container running Zigbee2MQTT alongside Home Assistant Container on a mini PC, keeping the coordinator service fully isolated from the HA process so updates to either never break the other
- Use the EFR32MG21's support for Zigbee Green Power devices to pair battery-free Zigbee switches (like EnOcean or Philips Hue wall switches) directly to Home Assistant via ZHA, no battery, no wiring
- Run the coordinator on a Raspberry Pi 4 with the dongle in a USB 2.0 port, then use Zigbee2MQTT's device availability and LQI (link quality indicator) reporting to map signal strength across every node in your mesh and identify weak routing paths
Key Features
- EFR32MG21 chip: Silicon Labs coordinator silicon with active firmware development and broad community support
- Pre-flashed coordinator firmware: plug in and configure, no programmer or serial terminal required
- Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA compatible: full support for both integrations, no additional drivers needed
- Zigbee 3.0 compliant: backward compatible with Zigbee 1.2 and older paired devices
- Supports 100+ paired devices per coordinator: viable for whole-house mesh deployments
- Compact USB stick form factor: bus-powered, no external power supply needed
- External antenna connector available: useful when the dongle is inside metal enclosures or needs multi-floor range
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA with this dongle?
Both are fully supported. Zigbee2MQTT runs as a separate service, supports a wider device list, and receives faster device definition updates. ZHA is built directly into Home Assistant with no extra containers or config files. For maximum device compatibility or less common brands, Zigbee2MQTT is the stronger choice. For the simplest setup, ZHA works immediately.
Will this work on a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant?
Yes. Plug it into any USB port. Home Assistant OS, Supervised, and Container installs all support USB Zigbee coordinators. On a Pi 4, use a USB 2.0 port (the black ones) rather than USB 3.0 to avoid 2.4 GHz radio interference with your Zigbee network.
Does this need an external antenna to function?
No. It works at standard range without any antenna modification. The external antenna connector is useful if the dongle is inside a metal enclosure, behind thick walls, or needs to reach devices across multiple floors.
Can I update the coordinator firmware later?
Yes. The EFR32MG21 supports firmware updates over USB using tools like the Silicon Labs Firmware Flasher or the built-in flasher in Zigbee2MQTT. No JTAG hardware required for standard firmware updates.
Why we stock this
Curated by Kindly Morrow. We test and vet every product before it hits the store. If we wouldn't use it in our own builds, we don't sell it.
Things to build with this
Fun projects to try once you get your hands on it.
Movie mode with one tap
NFC tag on your coffee table. Tap your phone: lights dim, TV turns on, blinds close. Tap again to undo. Feels like magic every time.
Laundry notification system
Vibration sensor on your washing machine. When it stops vibrating, your phone buzzes. No more forgetting wet clothes for 3 days.
Automatic night light path
Motion sensors in the hallway trigger dim warm lights at floor level after 10pm. Walk to the bathroom without waking up fully.
Mailbox alert
Contact sensor on the mailbox door. Home Assistant sends a notification when mail arrives. Never walk to an empty mailbox again.
